Bio:
On leaving school at 16 George signed for Liverpool but he failed to settle on Merseyside and returned home after three months with homesickness. He then began playing for Bishopton Thistle amateurs before signing for Petershill Juniors, in 1968 after only one season in Springburn he stepped-up senior to Aberdeen. In three seaon's at Pittodrie he made only 1 league game for the Dons this was due to a career threatening injury to his left leg which seen him go under the knife on 8 occasions in Aberdeen. He then returned south and signed for Partick Thistle. His time at Firhill was blighted with injury too, he was named in the squad to travel to Hungary to face Honved but on the Sunday before he damaged his leg while training at Firhill, the following season (and another 2 operations later) he managed to finally make his Jags debut in a 2-0 defeat to Dumbarton at Boghead. He was released at the start of February 1974 and he finished the season playing the odd game for Stranraer and Alloa Athletic. In July 1974 he was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s first signing for East Stirling, where in 2 seasons with the Falkirk club he managed 53 league appearances scoring 6 goals. He then moved to Clyde but unfortunately never managed to kick a ball for the Bully Wee, this time George called time on his league career and returned to Petershill Juniors in 1976 helping them to promotion from the central league B division, the Whyte & Mackay Cup and the H Red Hackle Cup. In April 1978 he moved to Buckie Thistle in the Highland League where in September 1979 he helped Buckie win the Highland League cup. In the summer of 1980 he became player manager of Fraserburgh. He then took charge of Keith taking them to runners up in the league. His next stop was again hooking up with Sir Alex Ferguson now manger of Aberdeen, where he took charge of the very successful Aberdeen youth teams in the 1980’s discovering such starts as Eric Black, Neal Cooper and John Hewitt.. He returned to management in the highland league with Peterhead after a change of management at Pitodrie but we returned to working with youth players this time back in Glasgow with Celtic where he discovered future Scotland players inc. Shaun Maloney, Craig Beattie, John Kennedy, David Marshall and SteADAMS, George 1972-73 – Partick Thistle A Zphen McManus. He was persuaded to leave Celtic Park for a similar position at Motherwell. In 2003 he became Head of Youth Development at Rangers. Between 2006-14 he was director of football at Ross County. His son Derek played for Burnley, Ross County, Motherwell, Ayr United and Aberdeen. In 2007 he was manager of Ross County before moving south to Plymouth Argyle.
