A pupil of Cumbernauld High School Andy signed an S’Form for Partick Thistle in 1968, the Jags beating several English clubs, Rangers and Celtic to his signature. He progressed from Scotland Schoolboy to youth international and progressed into the Partick Thistle 1st team after a spell at feeder club Sighthill Amateurs. His 1st team debut came at Firhill in a 5-0 victory over Raith Rovers in a league cup section tie, Thistle would go on to lift the trophy minus young Andy. He became a first team regular in season 1974-75 at the centre of defence where he would continue to play until retiring in 1982. He helped Thistle win promotion out of the new 1st division in 1975-76, his other honour with the Jags was a Glasgow Cup Winners medal obtained at Firhill in a 1-0 victory over Celtic. Throughout his time at Firhill he was part-time his full time job was as a driver for Social Work Department in Cumbernauld, helping disabled children. He retired from football after leaving Firhill, and is thought to be still living in his native Cumbernauld working as a taxi driver.
