CALLAGHAN, Thomas

One time Partick Thistle boy ball and hard working midfielder, who started his career with a apprenticeship at Aston Villa in 1986, but he returned to Scotland after a year signing for Premier league St Mirren, but like his time at Villa he failed to break into the first team and moved to 1st Division Falkirk in 1989 finally making his first team debut at Station Park, Forfar, helping the Bairns record a 2-1 victory. He drifted out of the first team at Brockville and moved to 2nd Division Kilmarnock initially on loan. Tommy would make 21 appearances for the Rugby Park side as they won promotion finishing runner-ups. He moved from Kilmarnock in early 1992 with spells at Nesved (in Denmark) and East Fife. He joined Stirling Albion in the summer of 1992, helping the newly promoted 1st Division side maintain their 1st Division status until relegation in 1994. He left the Binos and had spells with Stranraer, Dunfermline Athletic, Livingston, Ross County and Finn Harps before in 1998 joining the club where he had been a ball boy 20 years earlier Thistle. His first season in a struggling 2nd Division Jags side saw him make 25 appearances as the club narrowly avoided the drop into the 3rd Division. He remained at Firhill the following season and was part of the Jags squad that reached the Quarter Final of the Scottish cup, he moved into coaching the Thistle Under 18 side in 2000, and in 2001 he became a football agent. Tommy made over 230 appearances in the Scottish league.
The Callaghan family where quite prominent in Scottish football with his father Tom playing for Dunfermline Athletic, Celtic and Clydebank. He was also Thistle’s reserve team manager under Bertie Auld. Tommy’s uncle Willie played with Berwick Rangers, Dunfermline Athletic, Cowdenbeath and represented the Scottish League. Tommy’s Cousin Willie also played for Dunfermline Athletic, Livingston, Clyde and Thistle.
