BOWIE, John
born. 12.01.1895, Govan
Outside-Left. An exciting fans favourite, who signed for Thistle from St Anthony’s Juniors after he scored 4 goals vs. Port Glasgow Athletic in August 1915. This signing was reported in the Partick & Marhill Press " as the capture of the season, with Thistle beating Third Lanark in securing the signature of the much coveted Govan lad. Bowie is reckoned one of the cleverest young left wingers playing" He made his debut a few days later in a 3-2 win over Morton at Firhill with Willie Whittle grabbing a hat-trick. The goals for Bowie started coming in early October with a brace in a 3-0 victory over Aberdeen at Firhill, in his debut season with the Jags finishing 5th in the 1st Division he managed 13 goals. Bowie picked up 2 Glasgow Cup Runners-Up medals in 1917 & 1919. He was unfortunately in and out of the team in season 1920-21 due to injury, missing the cup triumph over Rangers at Celtic Park. As the goals began to dry up, he left Firhill in 1922 and moved to Dumbarton on a short term deal, before a spell at Luton Town. In 1923 he moved to the Highland league with Forres Mechanics, and in 1924 sampled English football playing 7 games with Weymouth in the Southern League being retiring from football due to a long standing head injury.
