Jack as he was known was a half –back who gave splendid service for Partick Thistle between his debut in 1881 and departing for Burnley in 1884 His time with Thistle saw this excellent tackler and passer of the ball make 55 appearances for Thistle. Jack also captained the Jags for 2 seasons and represented Glasgow against Dunbartonshire in 1884.
