Forward. Atherton started his career in the east of Scotland with Dunfermline Juniors, Dundee Wanderers and Hibernian, before moving to the Southern League with Tottenham Hotspur. He returned to Edinburgh with Heart of Midlothian in 1899, a year later he had moved to Partick Thistle, where in his time at Meadowside his good form lead to him being called up to represent the Scottish League in Belfast in a 2-1 over the Irish League. The Jags were relegated at the end of the season and Atherton left the club. He then had spells with Dundee, Grimsby Town, Brentford and Motherwell.
