BELL, Bobby 1954-55

BELL, Robert
born. 23.03.1935, Glasgow

A Scotland School-boy internationalist inside-forward who signed for Partick Thistle from Springburn Secondary School in the early 1950’s, Bobby as he was known was farmed out to Baillieston Juniors to gain experience. He made his top team debut in 1954 in the Glasgow Cup, drawing with Queen’s Park at Hampden; he grabbed his first goal against Celtic in the 2nd round 2nd replay and was part of the side that lifted the trophy beating Rangers 2-0 at Hampden. Despite this he remained in the 2nd XI helping the Wee Jags win the Reserve South West Championship 2 points clear of nearest challengers Rangers. His career at Firhill never really took off like many his National service career interrupted this but while stationed in the South of England and turned out for Plymouth Argyle. He was released by Partick Thistle in April 1959 and moved onto Carlisle United in the English league. In August 1961 he played for Stranraer in their annual trial match, but failed to win a contract.
