Experienced winger who signed a short term contract for Partick Thistle after impressing at a mid season break in Blackpool. Bobby (as he was known) made a scoring league debut in 1980 for West Ham United v Watford in the English 2nd Division helping the Hammers win 3-2 at Upton Park (three days before he had made his senior debut in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid's nursery team Castilla in the first round / 1st leg tie of the European Cup Winners' Cup); that season the Hammers won promotion to the 1st division. He found life in the top flight of English football harder and by 1985 he had moved on to Aldershot Town in the 4th Division. He made over 50 appearances for his new club before moving to Swindon Town for a fee if £50,000 in October 1987.He followed this with spells at AFC Bournemouth, Northampton Town and Peterborough United before heading north for the Premier League. He had a Jags debut to forget being dismissed in a 5-1 defeat at Ibrox to Rangers, in his 7 appearances with the Jags he became a cult hero, with the Bobby Barnes Supporters club being formed by a group of German students who had followed the Jags while living in Glasgow. To this day the Bobby Barnes Supporters club make annual visit’s to Glasgow. Bobby was released by Thistle and moved to Ulisport Rangers in Hong Kong followed by stops at Kettering Town, Torquay United, Frankwell (Hong Kong) before ending his playing career with Hendon in the Isthmian League. He entered financial work for Professional Footballer Association after ending his playing career.
