AITKENHEAD, Walter 1906-07 - Partick Thistle A Z
A clever and elusive inside-left who came to prominence at Maryhill Juniors helping them win the North Eastern and Maryhill Charity cups in season 1905-06. In May 1906 Partick Thistle invited him and team mate Jimmy Muir to guest for them in a Glasgow League match away to Clyde. Thistle ran out 2-0 winners in front of 800 spectators thanks to goals by Nellie Gibson and guest Aitkenhead. He was duly signed and before September was out the following season he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers. In his ten seasons with Blackburn Rovers he played in 76 games in the top flight of English football scoring 28 goals the highlight being winning the 1st Division in 1913-14. He also guested for Preston North End during World War 1. He only represented Scotland once at full international level in March 1912 scoring two 1st half goals in a 4-1 victory over Ireland at Windsor Park. He also featured for the Anglo Scot’s in 2 international trail games at Cathkin Park in 1911 & 1914.

After his playing days he was involved in the textile industry trades in Lancashire where he was chairman and managing director of a cotton firm between 1920-59.
