CAIRNS, William Robert
born. 08.04.1961, Glasgow
dies. mid 1990’s in Canada
Centre-Half. A product of Clydebank Strollers who signed for Queen’s Park in 1980 making his debut later that season. Willie didn’t establish himself for the Spiders until 83-84, going on to make a total of 105 league games for the amateurs. He signed for Partick Thistle in 1986, the club by this time was under the managment of Derek Johnstone, and the playing squad was not the best but Willie was by no means the worst player in the side playing in 38 league games, scoring once against Dumbarton who were managed by his Uncle. Season 1987-88 saw Willie replaced by Budgie McGhee and by January he joined his Uncle at Dumbarton. After 18 months at Boghead he left Scotland for Australia. He unfortunately died in Canada in the mid 1990’s.
His uncle was the former Thistle manager and Scotland International Bertie Auld.
