Peter Bain
from the AFS:
Peter BAIN (Born Portsoy c1909. Died Portsoy 25.10.01)
Peter Bain played senior football in Scotland for Raith Rovers, Dundee United and Partick
Thistle. Aforward, his play was described by a cigarette card issued by Stephen Mitchell & Sons
of Glasgow, as characterised by speed and directness and “he crosses a ready and splendid ball”.
He was a left-winger who was also able to play at centre-forward.
His first senior club was Raith whom he joined from Highland League side Keith in the early
1930s and he made his debut for Raith at the end of 1933. He also played for Elgin City and
Buckie Thistle with some distinction.
Whilst playing as a professional footballer he studied to become a pyshical training instructor
and later developed a long career as a teacher. An all-round sportsman he also excelled at golf
and bowls. He did not take up the latter sport until he was 67 but went on to become club champion.
He played until last spring and won his last trophy in April 2001 – well into his nineties!
He visited Partick Thistle’s ground last winter to see them play in the Scottish Cup, was invited
to meet the chairman and was delighted to see a picture of himself on display at the club.
From scouting, teaching, taking part in sport or playing a role as a club official, he did everything
with commitment and success. He lived a long, active and honourable life.
