Match Report: from the Daily Record, 31st July 2000

FOOTBALL: THISTLE DO FOR ME SAYS JERED; PARTICK TH 0 CHESTERFIELD 1.

JERED STIRLING last night pleaded with Partick Thistleboss John Lambieto resurrect his career in Scotland.

The 23-year-old left back, a former Firhill favourite, returned home seven weeks ago after a successful year in the Republic of Ireland with Waterford.

Stirling, who had a spell in the Premier League with Motherwell, was given a 20-minute outing by Lambie on Saturday and is desperate to find a club.

He said: "I have been involved in the whole of Thistle's pre-season and I think I've done well enough.

"I was hoping to speak to John after the game but he's asked me to come in on Monday so hopefully we can sort something out.

"If John offered me the chance I would be keen to accept. It's difficult to get a club in football now. I've been full-time since I was 16 and I want to stay that way. I wouldn't want to go part-time and it hurts me to see all the foreign players coming into Scottish football."

Lambie fielded virtually all of his summer signings with only Ian Cameronmissing.

Jags conceded their first goal in pre-season friendlies after eight minutes of this match.

Chesterfield midfielder Ryan Williamsangled in a ball which was headed back across the face of goal by Luke Beckitt to allow the unmarked Sean Parish to head home.

STVwere at Firhill to film an episode of Taggart and one scene required the Thistle fans to pretend their team had scored.

Lambie said: "We are saving all our goals for the league. Chesterfield are 8-1 favourites to win the English Third Division and they are the best team we've played all pre-season.

"We've got a week to work with the players but it's definitely been the best and hardest pre-season I've experienced.

"I am looking fora left back but I've not made my mind up about Jered Stirling. Our squad is limited to 17 players and only one of them is a keeper and I want to bring someone in to put pressure on Kenny Arthur."
